Hanging With the City Boys / Ep 422 / Blue City Radio

Episode 422:

You’re not dreaming. NYCFC actually thumped an opponent. Granted it was Toronto, but former NYCFC captain, Sean Johnson, was in net for the Reds, so the level of enjoyment is high. The victory also meant that NYCFC should advance in the Leagues Cup, which they did after Atlas defeated Toronto on Sunday.

This week Mike Anderer and Mike Allen welcome Danny and Javier Gutierrez from The City Boys Podcast to the show. Together they breakdown last week’s victory and talk about the new players joining the squad.

The Blues Brothers of NYCFC / Ep 401 / Blue City Radio

Episode 401:

NYCFC played their second game of the 2023 season and it was a 1-1 draw in Chicago. While the result and the progression of play was important the real story of the week was the return of two Championship caliber players, James Sands and Santi Rodriguez.

But even that is not the headline of this week’s episode. The real treat for listeners and NYCFC fans is the interview in the second segment as Joe Tolleson and Ian Joy reunite on the microphones to chat NYCFC with the guys.

In the final segment Mike, J.R. and Mike Allen share their recap of the draw from Chicago and also listen to a brief interview captured at training with Andres Jasson.

The Underlying Stats Genius / Ep 396 / Blue City Radio

Episode 396:

This week is all about the numbers. The guys welcome for the first time on the show Paul Harvey (@thundering165) from The Outfield to breakdown NYCFC’s 2023 roster rebuild.

They also discuss the team’s first press conference of the new year and other news in the world of soccer, but really this episode is about the stats.

Who will be “The Hero Of Haarlem”? / Ep 395 / Blue City Radio

Episode 395:

That’s not a misspelling. “The Hero Of Haarlem” is the title of a story many know by description, if not by name. It’s the fable story of the Dutch boy that saves his village by placing his finger in the dike and holding back the water until help can arrive. It’s a fitting tale as NYCFC starts their ninth year in MLS. The roster is decimated by transfers and free agency. The coach is entering his first full season at the helm and the spine of the team is a mere shadow of the Championship squad from two years ago.

This week the guys are back to breakdown the major changes and attempt to look ahead at what this season might bring for the Boys in Blue.

Au Revoir, Montreal / Ep 386 / Blue City Radio

Episode 386:

NYCFC become only the second American team to travel to Canada in the MLS Cup Playoffs to earn the victory. On Sunday the Pigeons flew north of the border and easily defeated CF Montreal in front of their home fans. Similar to Decision Day, it was a costly victory. Three players suffered injuries and it was only because of a lack of subs that Talles Magno was forced to hobble around the center circle in the waning minutes of the match.

This week Mike, J.R. and Mike Allen welcome back Adam and Justin from the Post 90 Podcast to get into the key moments of the victory and the guys all give their thoughts on the Eastern Conference Final rematch coming up this Sunday in Chester.

A Costly Decision Day Win and an Inter Miami Playoff Preview / Ep 384 / Blue City Radio

Episode 384:

For the first time in their history NYCFC traveled down to Atlanta and came home with three points. Those three points would help NYCFC maintain their position in the Eastern Conference table, but it would come at a cost. Interim Head Coach, Nick Cushing, expressed concern over the injuries to Tayvon Gray, Talles Magno and Alfredo Morales after the game.

This week Mike and Mike Allen are joined by two great guests. Amanda Collins from Switch the Pitch helps recap the match in Atlanta and then in the second segment Franco Panizo from Miami Total Futbol gives us his perspective on NYCFC’s first round playoff opponent.

Taking Care Of Orlando and a Chat With Kevin O’Toole / Ep 383 / Blue City Radio

Episode 383:

NYCFC came out a little sloppy looking after their two week break. A close call took away a potential first half lead. Then the Boys In Blue would let one sneak in on a long throw set piece.

But Nick Cushing has found the magic for this team and two 60th minute subs would be enough to get the victory and leapfrog into third place in the Eastern Conference.

This week Mike, J.R. and Mike Allen take a look at the action from Sunday in Red Bull Arena, then in the second segment they are joined by NYCFC defender, Kevin O’Toole (@ktooleszn) to discuss his path to MLS and how MLS Next Pro has helped him prepare for first team minutes.

The guys spend a few minutes at the end to address the USMNT friendlies from last week and the damning report released by US Soccer on the allegations of rampant sexual misconduct in women’s professional soccer.

Champions Again, and Kings of New York / Ep 382 / Blue City Radio

Episode 382:

It was a great week for NYCFC and probably an even better one for interim head coach, Nick Cushing. After delivering poor result again and again, the coach finally got two demonstrative wins with a new twist on a familiar formation that proved to be the right recipe for the club.

This week the guys break down the two games and also discuss the impact they can have on the remainder of the season. Stick around till the end and hear Maxime Chanot address the media from the Campeones Cup.

Help, I’ve Lost My Star Players and I Can’t Get Up / Ep 380 / Blue City Radio

Episode 380:

If you were born before 2000 you probably remember this popular television commercial. An elderly woman is home alone and accidentally falls with no one around. She desperately cries out for help but no one can hear her? The audience is left wondering how long she will suffer until help arrives.

The elderly woman is a good representation of NYCFC at the moment. Devastated by long term injuries and the loan departure of Taty Castellanos, the one time point leaders for all of MLS since 2016 captured only three points of a possible 21 since August 1. The reigning champions and former top tier competitors have become mediocre at best, and that’s being kind.

This week Mike, J.R. and Mike Allen do their best to break it all down and see if there’s any light at the end of the tunnel.

Hanging With the City Boys / Ep 379 / Blue City Radio

Episode 379:

Not really much to say. Martins got hurt early. Gray came on and was excellent. Haak was poor. The second half subs did not positively impact the game and worst of all Cushing made excuses. Not the way NYCFC fans hoped it would go in Orlando.

This week the guys do their best to avoid talking about the most recent game and instead take the time to interview two of the newest podcasters on the NYCFC scene, Javier and Danny Gutierrez from the City Boys Show (@NYCFCCityBoys).
